Oh, everything--he's what I'd call a "kept man" meaning he's supported by a significant other in exchange for his company or what have you. It's the level below a stay at home husband, you see and for someone as meek as Kaneki-kun it's not terribly surprising to me.
Generally humans don't class each other as pets unless they're into certain subcultures, I would say he's more of a companion.
I understand it's a bit of a weird thing for you to come to grips with, but some peoples' personalities aren't active like yours and they need a benefactor. Or a protector.
Oh no, it doesn't have anything to do with your work ethic. Considering he was willing to play along with Rise-chan's ideas about promotion, I don't think it's fair for either of us to doubt his work ethic.
Besides, Killua, I don't have any gym badges at all, you don't think I'm lazy do you?
I don't doubt his work ethic, it was more a surprise that he just stopped at the first one. He just wanted the badge to learn FLY, but didn't decide to go after the gym that gets you the HM.
[He actually wasn't being mean in this case, just weirdly logical.]
You don't do much traveling ,so I didn't surprise me that you didn't go after badges since that's all they normally good for.
That's all right, I've had over 700 years of practice with goodbyes and "see you laters." Just be sure to keep me up to speed on where you are so I can send care packages!
Somewhere in the range of before departure and after talking to Kaneki
Kil, dear, were you talking to Kaneki-kun recently?

Hmmm yeah I need to ask him about a few things.

[...All right Botan, where are you going with this--]
Don't tell him that I told you this, but you do realize he has a lady friend right?
OMG
[Seemed like a clear case of laziness to him.]

[Of all the things, the hell]
Is he like some sort of house pet then?

[His mind went places for a second]
I'm just trying to wrap my head around this. So in this case, Maka is basically his patron then? Live-in Patron.

[That's not romantic at all, gosh.]
Yes, that's right. Yusuke would probably call it a "sugar mama" but please don't repeat any of this to Kaneki-kun.

[A better question is why does he even know that much]
Okay then that clears that up things, I thought the guy was just being lazy or just a bad trainer.
[That totally means he can say it to Maka's face though.]

[A pause, she hums with thought.]
I might, someday. Though not right now when you're going on your own journey. I'll just be a cheerleader for you from afar for now.

It might be a while before I get back , you better prepare yourself.
