Actually, there are a few unique materials in this place. I haven't seen them used though.

Seastone gives off the same energy as the ocean, it's harder than diamonds in my world, but it's mostly used to neutralize people with devil fruit powers.

Since your a marine that comes in handy being near water all the time.

A devil fruit is a special power. It lets humans or other species do some of the things pokemon do. Fire, smoke, magma, rubber, or there are zoans who have an extra animal species.

Devil fruit users are cursed however and weak to ocean and can't swim.

So you get a power, work to water and can't swim. It must be difficult, I get the feeling where you're from is mostly cover in water.

Almost completely. The islands aren't as big as Johto generally, so unless you wanted to be stuck in at most one or two cities, you'd have to sail to get elsewhere.

There are sky islands and the White Sea, but no, not generally. There are also a few devil fruit users that can fly, but they're extremely rare.

That seems sort of odd, but I guess water travel would be the best way to go around.

It is. Pretty much inescapable really. The storms in the New World would probably make air travel impossible anyway.
